Gardening For Sustainable Living

Before the pandemic hit, my family and I were heading to a more simple way of living. As someone who had lived with chronic illness for over a decade, we realized that the stress and chemicals present in our lives was toxic to our health and mental well being.

I gave up medication and started treating myself with natural therapies. I first turned to garden projects to help alleviate anxiety and get me out in in the sun.  Part of my issues I believe are due to the fact I was vitamin d deficient and needed to be putting more natural foods in to my body instead of chemically processed garbage.

Last year we really started getting into sustainable living and created several gardens on our small town property.

We had actually planned on moving this summer , however, with current world events, we have had to delay those plans so we are focusing on creating a food forest on our existing property.

The value in this bundle is immeasurable! Especially if you are a beginner gardener …

You may be facing gardening challenges like we are like gardening in small spaces and not having acres of land to grow your food.

Get creative! If you have space, build a raised enclosed garden . This is actually one of immediate projects.

Container gardens can also be utilized to grow many things like an herb garden, tomatoes , peppers, potatoes  and so much more.

So many things can be grown in containers and there are many ways you can start living a more sustainable life.

If you are anything like me then you LOVE variety! We also started a seed bank last year and continue to add to it.

I love being able to walk out my front door and pick a big , juicy heirloom tomato , grab herbs to season my dishes or dry and just be able to pick fresh, organic food for meals and canning recipes.

How I Created Sacred Space In A Multi Purpose Room

I live in a house that can be quite chaotic at times , 3 cats , a dog , a husband and 2 grown boys. Finding a quite place to work and meditate can be difficult.

When I was chronically ill , I was working propped up in bed and one of the first things I did that made a huge difference for my healing and self development was to create a space that was not cluttered with things I didn’t love or need in this space.

It is still a work in progress but I am getting closer to having a completely decluttered space that is full of positive energy.

I also started applying Feng Shui principles as best as I could in the space while filling it with things that brought me peace and joy and helped me to ground and center.

Creating Sacred Space In A Multi Functional Room

Making a space multi functional for 2 people can be challenging but lucky for me , I have a husband who loves my design taste.

I majorly decluttered the room several months back. I had a closet that was full of high end cosmetics that I no longer used plus a bunch of other “stuff” that was just collecting dust. This is still a work in progress but got rid of most of that stuff that just wasn’t in line with my life anymore. So I have replaced those items and use the closet more to store things for easier access.

I replaced those things with:

Creating Sacred Space At Home Is Essential To Maintain Good Mental Health

With the current state of the world, it is important to take time to clear negative energy and disconnect from the media.

Perhaps you used to leave the home to meditate or practice yoga and due to social distancing rules, you cannot leave the house to go to the studio.

Even if it is just a corner of a room. create enough space for an alter ( if you need one) , a yoga mat and a meditation pillow.

When I am working ( my workspace is placed in the direction in my room for abundance a) and I have my desk in front of a window where I have my beautiful Mandala Sun catcher from Catch The Sun Designs.

I have partnered with the good folks over at Catch The Sun Designs for an awesome Mother’s Day Giveaway!

DIY Face Mask – No Sewing Machine Required

DIY Face Mask – No Sewing Machine Required

With the shortage of medical facemasks I wanted to see of I could make a diy face mask without using a sewing machine. The only time a needle and thread was used , was to secure the elastics to the mask.

DIY Face Mask To Help Protect Against Covid 19 Virus

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR DIY FACE MASK:

  • 9 X 12 PIECE OF FABRIC
  • IRON ON ADHESIVE
  • NEEDLE & THREAD
  • ELASTIC BAND
  • PIECE OF FELT TO USE AS FILTER

I started with a piece of fabric that I had cut to 9 x 13 and folded each side over about an inch and ironed it flat with my steam iron. (Hence the drops of water on the fabric)

This was my first trial on making the diy face mask and I plan to try a couple of different methods. With this first one, I wanted people to be able to make their own mask without the need for a sewing machine or a lot of hand stitching.

I have used this iron on adhesive for several previous projects with great results, so thought it would be something really easy for those who do not know how to sew ( or like me , just aren’t very good at it! )

Measure and cut a piece of iron on fuse tape to fit under each fold and iron each side to fuse the fabric together.

Next you will want to fold the fabric into 3 sections  with some overlap, much like a clutch or envelope.

You will want to iron so that you can see the creases. I also made a crease directly in the middle of the fabric.

Flip the fabric over and pinch to create pleats in the fabric. I created 3 pleats and ironed them to hold the pleats in place.

You will then want to flip it over and fold it back in to an envelope. Once you have it folded, take each end and secure with fuse tape. Tuck your elastic band into the crease and throw a couple of hand stitches in each end to secure the elastic. ( I had cut two 7.5 inch pieces of elastic but found the ear loops way too tight, so I would likely try 9 inches next time)

I also tried doing one solid piece of elastic in the middle to secure behind the head but found the fit was not as secure.

The reason we folded it over in this fashion was to allow for a pocket to slip in either a piece of felt like I have used or any other material that you can use as a makeshift filter. While this is not as good as the medical masks you can purchase, it will offer some level of protection.

As I previously mentioned, I will be attempting other versions of the mask and will be posting them so that others can make their own if they are unable to purchase masks.

I also just want to re-iterate how important it is for people to be practicing social distancing and self isolation in order to cut the exposure and growth of the virus.

I have some other posts that you may find helpful.

You can also add the essential oils directly to aloe gel or any natural lotion and have a squeezable or pumpable product.

While so many people are stocking up on clorox disinfectant wipes and leaving the shelves empty , take comfort knowing that you can still purchase the ingredients needed to make your own antiviral products at any health store or order from any reputable online company or Amazon. And if you are anything like me, then you already have many , if not all of these supplies already on hand.

I have actually been sick less often since switching to natural methods for my health & wellness like essential oils.

These cold & flu busting essential oils can also be diffused ( just be careful around pets, infants and pregnant women. Always double check the pre-cautions on each essential oil)

No Diffuser? No Problem! Just add the essential oils to some witch hazel and mist into the air.

Etsy has some amazing diffusers and essential oil diffusing jewelry.

Time Saving Morning Hack – Bullet Proof Coffee

Time Saving Morning Hack – Bullet Proof Coffee

Time Saving Morning Hack - Easy Bullet Proof Coffee.

If you are anything like me then you like to start your day with a delicious cup of Bullet Proof Coffee.

And like me, I am sure you don’t always have time to wait for a full pot of coffee to brew and quite often only need 1 cup , so making an entire pot would not only be inconvenient but wasteful!

Time Saving Morning Hack!

I love using these reusable k-cup coffee filters.

  • They are convenient
  • Time Saving
  • A Thrifty Alternative To Pre-Packaged Coffee Pods
  • Environmentally friendly ( it cuts down on the amount of plastic cups going to the landfills)

I love that rather than having to wait 15 minutes for an entire pot of coffee, I have a cup of coffee ready to go in literally less than a minute! #morninghack

Because I am really trying to limit sugar, I prefer to use these reusable filters over the flavored pre-filled ones, so that I can use my sugar free sweetener of choice. ( You can check out some of my most loved keto products and sugar free sweetener in this post)

These little keurig coffee filters are pretty durable compared to some of the other brands I have purchased in the past. Clean up is already a breeze with these , a quick rinse and they are ready to go again , however,  you can also buy little paper filters to go in them as well.  (The papers are biodegradable.#environmentallyfriendly)

What About the Cost? Just about everyone now owns a Keurig or some type of quick-brew coffee machine. The market itself is wide open to new coffee-making inventions and one of those is the Reusable K-Cup. It was born out of necessity. Using a Keurig each day to make your coffee may be the fastest way to get a great cup of coffee, but it’s a bit expensive. K-Cup pods usually cost between $.50 and $.60 each. The reusable pods are a thrifty alternative. Let’s take a popular brand called Folgers as an example and you’ll see the difference. A 48-ounce tub of Folgers retails for about $10 and it will make 380 cups of coffee, 6 ounces each (the average cup size). This equals to a cost of about $.026 per cup. If you’re on a budget (or even if you’re not), there’s a great deal of difference between paying 60 cents for a cup of coffee as opposed to 3 cents. Over a period of time, the savings could be substantial, especially if you drink more than one cup a day or have multiple people in your family.

EASY BULLET PROOF COFFEE RECIPE

I am one of those people that eyeballs everything . so the measurements I am providing are just a starting point. There is no hard and fast rule on how to make the perfect cup of bulletproof coffee.

Start by filling your Delibru Keurig coffee filter half to 3/4 of the way full. I choose the medium cup on the Keurig coffee machine.

Once the coffee has brewed , add the following and pulse for a few seconds in your blender of choice.

  • 1 tsp salted butter
  • 1 TBSP MCT/ Coconut Oil
  • sweetener of choice ( 1-2 tsp depending on your desired level of sweetness)
  • 3 TBSP cream

If you are a cafe mocha fan, you can also add in 1 tsp of organic cocoa powder and a dash of organic cinnamon)

These little filters are also perfect for loose leaf tea! I always have an assortment of tea , including loose leaf in my house and this makes for a quick , piping hot cup of tea in about 45 seconds flat!

I have saved huge amounts of money by switching to reusable k-cups . Rarely do I go to Starbucks anymore or rely on the coffee shop for my morning cup of java. As a single person this would be a substantial savings, but we have 4 people in this house , so do the math on those savings! #budgetfriendly

Give them a try! I would love to hear what you think about them in the comments.
