DIY Room Spray Recipes Made With Essential Oils

Ditch the chemical laden , store bought room and linen sprays and make your own DIY Room spray with essential oils.

If you have been following me for any length of time, you likely know that several years ago I made a conscious decision to start replacing the toxic chemical laden products in my home with healthier and more natural versions.

In many cases , I make my own and while it is a part of my business selling ready made products, I believe everyone should have the option of making their own products as well.  Affordability can be an issue when it comes to buying healthier , more natural products but you can easily make your own with quality, budget friendly essential oils and some staple ingredients that you can buy off of Amazon.

These DIY Essential Oil Room Sprays, can also be used as a Linen Spray to freshen up your sheets, as well as add a antibacterial and antimicrobial benefit. ( Depending on the essential oils chosen.)

I will share with you some of my favorite essential oil recipes and essential oil blends that you can use to make your own diy linen spray.

Many people have been asking me to share my recipes over on TIKTOK and I have also heard that people need a more affordable option than the MLM Option that I have been using for years. And while I do believe they are some of the best quality oils, they are not within everyone’s budget .

I have also heard you when you said you wanted a quality option that did not require you to be on a monthly autoship! I get it!

Contrary to popular belief, there is more than 1 great essential oil company, but I definitely have my top 5 and will be doing some side by side and price comparisons very soon.

I recommend have a few different sized amber glass bottles. 4 oz bottles are great for travel and small gifts, 8 oz are great sizes for bathrooms and the 16 oz bottles are especially great for the Linen Spray , as you will find you go through more refreshing your furniture and linens.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

How much essential oil should I add to room spray?

My general room of thumb is 1/4  witch hazel to water ratio.  And a really easy way to measure for those who do not have a scale is to use measuring cups. There are 8 oz in a cup of liquid, so you would be able to make an 8 oz spray or two 4 oz bottles.  Double the recipe to fill your 16 oz bottle.

My recommendation for the essential oils is to use approximately 30 drops EO for a 4 oz room spray.

(Note: Witch hazel helps the oil and water combine and will help the scent linger for a longer period of time.)

I also add a drop or two  of liquid castile soap to act as an extra binder and emulsifier.

We use amber glass bottles for a few reasons, first to protect the essential oils from degrading through light , as well as to make sure that essential oils aren’t eating the plastic, there are no leached chemicals from plastic and glass bottles can be recycled over and over again!

Essential Oil Room Spray Recipe

  • 1/4 cup witch hazel
  • 3/4 cup distilled or Kangen water
  • drop or 2 plain Liquid Castile Soap
  • 40-60 drops essential oil ( based on personal preference)

DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL to make sprays!

Mix together all of your liquids and then add essential oils and stir with a non metal spoon or whisk. I will often just make a batch of plain room and linen spray base and add essential oils to the bottle and give it a little shake. This way I can make several different scents.

This will fill two 4 oz bottles, so I would put 20 -30 drops of essential oil per bottle.

RECOMMENDED ESSENTIAL OILS & BLENDS

I honestly could go on and on because the variety of oils available at Revive Essential Oils truly is unmatched! You can save even further by choosing a starter kit .

With Revive you can order as little or as much as you want , no monthly autoships and they are less expensive because they are not having to pay on out tiered levels like an MLM. They use the same 3rd party testing that has been used by all of the bigger, more commonly known essential oil companies.  They also carry many of the other supplies you would need to make your own DIY Products. ( And several version of many well known higher priced blends) I have to take a minute to shout out their Version of Young Living’s Abundance Essential Oil.

DIY ROOM SPRAY LABELS

Bring your DIY to a whole new level with professional looking labeling. Etsy has a number of different templates you can choose from and they are big time savers if you do not want to spend a ton of time designing a label.  These labels are a great idea especially if you plan on giving these out as gifts or selling.

How To Can Your Own Sugar Free Jam – Urban Homesteading

How To Can Your Own Sugar Free Jam – Urban Homesteading

Preserving food has become an important part of our life. In this Blog post I am going to share with you how to can your own sugar free jam and share with you why we started urban homesteading.

I spent over 10 years of my life chronically ill and relying on other people to cure my chronic illness and ease my anxiety. At one point, I spent over 8.5 months bed ridden going through withdrawals from all of the medications I had been on for years. I felt defeated , unsupported and spent most of my days in pain, suffering from wave after wave of panic attacks…

So what changed? I took 100% responsibility for my health , both physical and mental , along with my financial health.

I became very conscious of what I was putting in my body , my mind and allowing to enter my space energetically.

I began to ditch all of the chemical laden products I had been using for years. My home is now stocked with chemical free , plant based alternatives and products I have made myself and food I have preserved myself.

We had visited the local market and got some great deals on some produce, fresh strawberries were one of the things we scored, so I decided to take the day and do some canning. This sugar free strawberry jam turned out AMAZING ! It is so rewarding to preserve your own food and I feel good knowing exactly what is in my food!

Sugar Free Strawberry Jam Recipe

This jam is sooo easy to make and takes very little effort.

INGREDIENTS:

4 CUPS STRAWBERRIES

2 CUPS PINEAPPLE JUICE

2 PACKAGES SUGAR FREE PECTIN

3 CUPS SPLENDA

Tyent USA - Water For Wellness

Preserving Food

I started by putting my jars in the dishwasher to make sure they were clean and sanitized . I then  washed and hulled the strawberries ( I clean mine in Kangen water first to ensure I am removing any potential chemicals or bugs) . I then put a layer of strawberries in a glass casserole dish and smashed them with a potato masher. ( it is easier if you cut them up). Once of all of the strawberries were mashed, I measured to make sure I had 8 cups and dumped into a stainless steel pot and set it to medium heat.  I then added the no sugar needed pectin and whisked it until dissolved. Turn your heat up and bring to a boil , add your Splenda and boil for 3 minutes. Turn off the heat and skim the foam from the top.

I laid out all my jars on towels on my counter and then filled , leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace. I then wiped down my jar jars with vinegar and topped with my sanitized lids. I put on the rings and tightened finger tight.

I then placed the jars into the water bath canner with the lid on, making sure they were covered by an inch of water and when it came to a rolling boil, started a timer for 10 minutes ( based on my altitude).

I then turned off the heat and removed the lid, let them sit for 5 minutes and then transferred to the counter to cool and left undisturbed for 24 hours.

I used the Bernardin Recipe here.

How long will home canned sugar free jam last?

For sugar free jam , it typically will last for approximately a year. Jams made with real sugar do have a bit of a longer shelf life and people have claimed that their canned goods are still good several years later. As with anything , use your own discernment and make sure there is nothing visibly wrong with it or that it does not smell off.  And ALWAYS check your seals!

Where can I buy Canning Supplies?

I purchase a lot of my supplies locally from hardware or farm supply stores but I also purchase supplies from Amazon.com, Amazon.ca , Cabela’s and other online stores that cater to homesteaders.

There are so many different styles of charcuterie boards to choose from.  While the ones made with resin are beautiful to look at , I would worry that the chemicals from the resin would leach into my food so I would only use them for serving if I was setting dishes on them. To be able to place food directly on the platter, I would choose to go with a natural wood like walnut or olive wood that has been treated with a more natural option , such as linseed oil or beeswax.

Here is a round up of  are some of my favorite Charcuterie Board Ideas.

How To Grow Your Own Herbal Apothecary Garden Indoors

How To Grow Your Own Herbal Apothecary Garden Indoors

Herbs contain so many nutrients, vitamins and minerals and also provide so many superior health benefits.

Like so many people these days, having access to healthy chemical free produce and natural options to care for and maintain optimal health & wellness , is a top priority for this family.

I need access to fresh produce so that I can feed my body things that are not going to cause massive inflammation and digestive issue like so many store bought foods do.

This year we decided to try our hand at Urban gardening…

We live on a small property in town, so having acres of gardens or a greenhouse is not in the realm of possibilities,  so we built a raised garden bed along with several smaller gardens and added in container gardening along with an indoor grow tent. I now will be able to grow my own organic herbs and produce all year long!

The fact that I get to control what is going and not going in to my food is key to building a strong immune system and healthy body.

There are many things that you can grow for your own medicinal herbal apothecary and having a way to grow all year long ensures that you have a fully stocked herbal pantry at all times!

20 Herbs To Stock In Your Herbal Apothecary

Some great things to grow and dry for your herbal medicinal cabinet are:

  • Chamomile
  • Lavender
  • Lemon Balm
  • Sage
  • Basil
  • Feverfew
  • Calendula
  • Cat Nip
  • Clover
  • Roses
  • Cannabis
  • Echinacea
  • Borage
  • Yarrow
  • Mint
  • Cornflower
  • Bee Balm
  • Holy Basil
  • Pineapple Sage
  • Rosemary
shelf, store, shop

You can use a tent similar to the one below that we are using to grow organic peppers for hot sauce,  to grow a steady supply of organic herbs.

Indoor tents are also great to start your plants indoors before planting outside. (Just as an FYI , these tents are super easy to set up! I love how you can customize your tent for the space that you are going to be putting it in.)

These tents are a great alternative for greenhouses.

Once you harvest your herbs , you will want to dry them if you are stocking your pantry, it is the easiest method to preserve them.

You can dry bundles out in the sun, in the oven on low heat or in a good quality dehydrator.

Once the herbs are dry but not crumbly, store in mason jars or glass apothecary jars. You will then have easy access to your herbs to make herbal tinctures, salves, ointments, infused oils and herbal teas.

Keep an eye for further gardening posts and to see what we were able to grow in our new indoor garden.

One of the next projects will be to see if we can grow tropical fruit trees  in the grow tent and what kind of yield we will be able to produce. For the first round we are growing in organic soil and future grows we will be testing out a hydroponic grow.

I would love to hear what you are growing in your garden and what you do with your harvest.
